Smoothies for Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a painful bone condition that is caused by bone breakdown and loss of bone. Symptoms include excessive joint pain, back pain, bones that easily break and even a loss of height. Though there are no easy ways to solve the loss of height, there are certain foods such as smoothies that can ease some of the symptoms and support bones. These smoothies contain certain ingredients as seen below that provide this necessary relief:

1. Plain yogurt
Yogurt is a great ingredient to add to your smoothies for the prevention of osteoporosis and to support bone health. This food has high levels of calcium, which aids in bone strength. If you are not used to plain yogurt, mix it with other fruits and vegetables and you will not taste the difference. You can also add honey to give it a certain sweetness if you are not used to the lack of sugar.

2. Flaxseed
Flaxseed is the seed of flax and has the ability to lower your risk of getting osteoporosis and can build stronger bones. It can increase bone mineral density, and it is also beneficial for diabetes in women. Diabetes may be an early indicator of osteoporosis, so this is especially important if you are already a sufferer of this condition. This ingredient can easily be mixed into your smoothie, and you will not even notice the difference.

3. Dark leafy greens
Many individuals have a difficult time drinking green smoothies that come from leafy vegetables. Dark greens, like spinach or kale, are extremely beneficial to those who are at risk of osteoporosis, however. You can meet over 20% of your daily goal just by adding one cup of these vegetables to your smoothies. As you know, calcium is great for bone health and strengthening your bones. There are also significant levels of vitamin K in these greens, reducing the risk of the disease.

4. Dried figs
Dried figs are a delicious fruit and are an excellent addition to a fruity smoothie. You can receive 121 milligrams of calcium just from putting half of a cup of these pieces of fruit into your smoothie. There is also potassium found in figs and magnesium, which is also wonderful for promoting bone health. You can keep the calcium where it belongs in the bones and increase bone density.

5. Fish oils
Fish oils come in the form of vitamin pills or as a liquid ingredient. They are full of omega-3 fatty acids either way, however. These fatty acids have the ability to prevent bone breakdown that is the cause of osteoporosis and leads to a significant amount of pain associated with the disease. Simply add the oils after you have added all other ingredients to your smoothie to give you the health you need for your bones.

Smoothies are a great way to get the nutrients you need to promote your overall health, including bone health. You can combine the above ingredients or make different smoothies with any combination of the above ingredients in order to prevent the symptoms and the risks of osteoporosis. You do not want to live with the pain and discomfort that is caused by this awful bone disease coming from bone breakdown.
