Safe Tips for Roadtrips with Pets

Everybody is taking road trips these days! Road trips are fun, and they can give you a lot of amazing memories. Do you want to try going on a road trip with your pets? It is easy and possible when done the right way. Here are some tips for a pet friendly road trip you can take.

  • Pack the essentials
This is one of the most essential tips for a pet-friendly road trip. Forgetting your pet’s food or sleeping bags can mean your pet goes without basics throughout the trip. Trying to buy these in tourist locations can prove very expensive. Do not forget to pack the following.
    • Food packs
    • Water bowls and freshwater
    • Sleeping essentials
    • Medicines
    • Treats
    • Leashes and collars
    • Poop bags
    • Toys
  • Invest in a pet crate or a pet seat belt
If your pet has not been trained to sit quietly for hours together in the car, then a pet crate will help. A big dog or cat walking front and back in the car can distract you while driving and cause accidents. Pet seat belts are also safer options to invest in.
  • Don’t feed your pets before a long drive
Plan to feed your pet at least 2-3 hours before the drive and not right before traveling. Pets can get car sick, and when the tummy is full, this can cause vomiting and discomfort.
  • Keep essentials to entertain your pets
If you are planning on a long road trip, one of the very practical tips for a pet-friendly road trip is to have an entertainment bag with you for your pet. You can add chew toys and treats that your pets will like. This will help them stay quiet and composed during the trip.
  • Plan to take multiple stops
Irrespective of how well-behaved your pet is, plan on making multiple stops to give them a taste of fresh air and stable ground. This will improve your pet’s mood and will also prevent them from getting restless and agitated inside the vehicle.
  • Respect bathroom breaks
Just like people, pets need bathroom breaks too. Letting the dog or cat out to do their business will also help keep them in a good mood during the drive.
  • Protect your car
Cover your car seats with waterproof linings that will ensure your seats are safe even if your pet spills food or water inside.

All these tips for a pet-friendly road trip will ensure that both you and your pet have a great time traveling. Respect the pet’s mood and do not forget to have your vet on speed dial in case your pet falls sick during the journey. Take shorter trips initially to let your pet adjust to travel plans.
